Welcome to IBMBB

The Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IBMBB) is a postgraduate training institute of the University of Colombo. The main thrust areas of activities are MSc, MPhil and PhD programmes. The main objective of these courses is to provide focused training in current areas of molecular life sciences relevant to the development of Sri Lanka and also to encourage young graduates to proceed for further advanced studies leading to PhD.


IBMBB will commence academic activities for its 2017 intake of students for MSc Courses. MSc programmes at IBMBB include extensive laboratory training, and its graduates are in high demand with some even receiving job offers before completion of the degree programme. Some of the successful MSc students are able to obtain PhD studentships at the IBMBB. All MSc courses are full time and fee levying.

Placements for Commonwealth Scholarships
IBMBB is one of the institutes recognized for hosting Commonwealth Scholars by The Association of Commonwealth Universities. MSc in Molecular Life Sciences and MSc in Cellular & Molecular Immunology programmes offered by IBMBB will admit Commonwealth Scholars through the Ministry of Higher Education, Sri Lanka.
Those who wish to apply (Foreign Applicants only) for 2017 MSc programmes at IBMBB, may apply for Commonwealth Scholarships 2016/2017.


The Eighth Annual Scientific Sessions of the Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, University of Colombo will be held on the 27th of May 2016. The Scientific programme will include plenary lectures and oral/poster presentations.

The Regional Conference of Young Scientists on Nanoscience and Nanomaterials 2015, held in Bangalore India was organized by the Regional Offices for Central and South Asia of The Third World Academy of Science (TWAS) for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries, based in Trieste, Italy. Seven researchers from IBMBB working on the fields of developmental biology, cancer, cloning, immunology and molecular medicine attended the conference. They participated under the guidance and leadership of Emeritus Prof. Eric H. Karunanayake, Founder Director of the IBMBB and Regional Fellow of TWAS, who is also credited as being a pioneering scientist in introducing molecular biology to the Sri Lankan science sphere.
