Masters in Bioinformatics


With the rapid advances in Molecular Biology and related fields, immense amount of
biological data are being generated requiring their extensive management, analysis and
interpretation. Bioinformatics originated as a hybrid between Molecular Life Sciences and
Computing to fulfil this requirement.

Worldwide market for Bioinformaticians is exponentially increasing with Next Generation
Sequencing machines turning out nucleotide data at an unprecedented manner. Aim of
this programme is to train scientists who are capable of developing bioinformatics solutions.

The Programme
Full time (week days, 09.00 - 17.00) , two year programme providing advance training
and a strong foundation in Bioinformatics. This programe will be jointly offered by the
Institute of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IBMBB), University of
Colombo and the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC).
Course content will include Biocomputing, Cellular & Molecular Biology, Biochemistry,
Statistics for Bioinformatics, Sequence Analysis, Structural and Functional Analysis of
Proteins and Phylogenetic Analysis.
 
Recognized as
IBMBB and UCSC are the pioneers in the fields of Molecular Life Sciences and Computer
Science respectively. Both institutes are internationaly recognized for postgraduate training
&research.
IBMBB is the National Node for European Molecular Biology Network (EMBnet), a global
network of Bioinformatics profesionals.
Students of IBMBB and UCSC have won several international and national awards for
cutting edge research.

We look for
Suitably qualified young dynamic individuals with a Bachelor's Degree in any branch of Life
Sciences, Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Physical
Sciences or Chemical Sciences. Any other academic or professional qualification which is
deemed equivalent by the Senate of the University of Colombo.
(Those holding degrees from overseas Universities are required to provide evidence of
Advanced Level or equivalent qualifications
